Seatbelt stop becomes ecstasy bust in North Syracuse

Cicero Police, Onondaga County Sheriff’s, NYS Police assist North Syracuse Police
At approximately 12:55 p.m. Saturday May 29, North Syracuse Police Officer Jeff Tripp made a traffic stop on south
Main Street because the driver and passenger weren’t wearing their seat belts.
Tripp said he detected the odor of marijuana inside the vehicle which was being operated by David J. Lefler. The officer
also observed leafy marijuana remnants in the glove box.
The driver gave Tripp consent to search the vehicle. When the passenger, Omar M. Amin, 18, of Mattydale, was asked
to step out of the vehicle he was found to be in possession of ecstasy.
When the officer was placing Amin under arrest he resisted by fleeing the scene. Officers also found the male left
behind a small bag of marijuana on his seat.
Officers from the North Syracuse Police Department, New York State Police, Cicero Police and the Onondaga County
Sheriffs pursued the subject on foot from Lonergan Park on South Main Street to Millen Drive.
Officer Cushman of the North Syracuse Police Department finally spotted the subject next to 207 West Wells Ave.,
hiding in the residence’s bushes.
After another short foot pursuit the male was apprehended on West Wells Avenue near Coolidge Road by New York
State Police and Onondaga County Sheriff Deputies.
Amin, of 116 Roxboro Circle, Mattydale, was subsequently charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance in
the fifth degree for intent to sell, criminal possession of a controlled substance in the seventh degree, resisting arrest,
unlawful possession of marijuana, and passenger without a seat belt.
Amin was arraigned in the town of Clay Court before Judge Geiser who remanded him to the Justice Center in lieu of
$10,000 cash or $15,000 bail bond. He is due back in court on June 3 for his preliminary hearing.
The driver, Lefler, was issued a traffic ticket for not wearing a seat belt and was released.
“In this case, which occurred during the Click It or Ticket enforcement period in the state, not only did Amin get a ticket
for not wearing his seat belt but he ended up in the Justice Center for drug possession and resisting arrest,” said Tripp.
“Wearing a seat belt not only saves lives but it exposes criminals.”
